UNB GM helped win Memorial Cup

Long-time General Manager Roger Shannon reached another milestone in his hockey journey as he played a key role in the recent Memorial Cup Championship for the Shawinigan Cataracts of the QMJHL. Shannon holds the position as Assistant General Manager in Shawinigan and helped build the team to the National Championship with a series of key trades during the 2011-12 season. Interesting to note, three of the key deals included former V-Reds Prospects players included tournament MVP and NHL draft pick Michael Chapit, tournament all-star defensemen and NHL draft pick Brandon Gormley and Championship game 2nd star and NHL draft Morgan Ellis.
Shannon has been a key part of the UNB programs as well and has three National Championships to his credit with the Varsity Reds. The President and Co-Founder of the V-Reds Prospects program was thrilled with the victory calling it “one of the greatest moments of my life.”
UNB was well represented at the Memorial Cup Championships with former 1998 National Championship coach Mike Kelly in a coaching/general manager role with the 2011 Memorial Cup Saint John Sea Dogs and team included an amazing 17 players who have been part of the Prospects program including NHL picks Zack Phillips, Nathan Bealieu, Ryan Tesink & Stephen MacAulay. Prospects from ’92 coached by Shannon on the team included Phillips, Kevin Gagne, Spencer MacDonald, Grant West and Pierre Durepos. Six members of the Cataracts were former Prospects while two London Knights reps included NHL picks Jared Knight and Austin Watson.
The VRed Prospects organization has 106 players playing Major Junior hockey in Canada this pas year.
