Cam Critchlow joins hockey team for 2012-13 season
May 31, 2012
The defending 2012 Atlantic University Champion University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds men’s hockey program would like to announce the addition of forward Cam Critchlow to their team. Critchlow is a five year veteran of the QMJHL where he was team captain of both the Halifax Mooseheads and Lewiston Maineiacs. A former original 1991 V-Red Prospects, Critchlow played AAA hockey in Fredericton as a Peewee and Bantam before spending two years for the Notre Dame Hounds program in Wilcox, Saskatchewan.
The 20 year-old forward recently earned an invitation to the Edmonton Oilers NHL summer development camp after completing a sensational QMJHL playoff and helping lead the Halifax Mooseheads to the third round of the Quebec league playoffs. Critchlow used up his final year of major junior eligibility this season but made the most of it in his short stint in Halifax.
Critchlow set career QMJHL highs with the Mooseheads this year, scoring 21 goals and 29 assists for 50 points during 68 regular season games. But his finest moments came in this year’s playoffs when he scored 12 goals and added seven assists for 19 points in 16 games to help the Mooseheads advance to the league semifinals. Most memorable was his four-goal performance in a 5-4 overtime win over the Quebec Remparts in Game 7 of their second-round series.
Critchlow was a former first round selection of the Bathurst Titan before being acquired by Lewiston GM Roger Shannon in a key trade. Shannon, who also holds a similar role with the Varsity Reds, established Critchlow as the Maineiacs captain and the feisty, diminutive forward helped lead the team to a solid 2011 playoff run before the team was forced to fold. He was picked up by Victoriaville in the QMJHL dispersal draft before being traded to Halifax where he made a significant impact on the Moosehead franchise. He has established himself as as a popular team leader and a tremendously hard worker with a penchant for scoring key goals. He leaves the league with 139 points in 313 career games.
Varsity Reds coach Gardiner Mac Dougall was thrilled with the addition of Critchlow to the Varsity Reds line-up. “It’s an exciting moment for our program to welcome back one of our originals from our V-Red Prospects youth development program and to see how well he has developed and matured as a player and leader during his career in the QMJHL. He is a key addition to our line-up as he has proven he can play well with good players and in a number of important roles and in key situations. He has proven himself as an accomplished leader, plays gritty and hard on pucks and has shown continuous improvement because of his work ethic and attitude – he is an excellent fit here at UNB and we expect him to be a special player to make a significant difference in our program.”
Critchlow is the son of Tom and Kelly Critchlow of Moncton, NB, and has a brother Aiden who played Midget hockey in Moncton. Critchlow is scheduled to make his first V-Reds appearance at the UNB Hockey golf tournament scheduled for Kingswood on June 5th.
