UNB Players Receive Major Awards
The UNB Varsity Reds had another strong season, capturing their 13th overall AUS Championship and being the #1 ranked team in Canada for the majority of the season. The past week, several players copped individual awards at the annual UNB Athletic Banquet and the highly popular UNB Senior Recognition Night held at the Kingswood Lodge.
UNB ATHLETIC AWARDS
4TH Year Senior Defenseman Jon Harty – Oromocto, NB capped off an outstanding UNB career by capturing the UNB Male Athlete of the Year Award. Harty was a 1st team AUS All-Star, 2nd team CIS All Canadian and named an All Star Defenseman at the recent CIS University Cup Championships. He was also named winner of the Pete Violette Award for UNB’s top D for the second consecutive year. Jon was the 11th UNB Hockey player to be awarded this special honour. Top 3 Finalist for the award was UNB Senior Captain Kyle Bailey
UNB Rookie of the Year was awarded to Tyler Carroll from Strathroy, Ontario who had an outstanding freshman season for the V-Reds. He scored 15G-11A for 26 points in 27 GP –top 3 in AUS rookies while tied for 1st in Goals and GWG and 1st among rookies in plus-minus. He was the 13th UNB Hockey player to win this award.
UNB Red Black Award for overall contribution as a player, student and community member was awarded to Kyle Bailey – Bailey is a 3 time winner of this award and was also the CIS and AUS winner for this award.
The Directors Unsung Hero Award in Hockey was won by Senior forward Dion Campbell – Melville, SK.
