REDS Earn Silver At AUS Championship
(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS came up just short at the Atlantic University Sport men's curling championship, in Halifax, Sunday.
UNB's Jamie Stewart rink fell 6-5 to the Memorial Sea-Hawks in the gold medal game.
"We played really well this weekend against some very tough competition," said Stewart. "We were able to come from behind in this morning's semi-final but unfortunately couldn't keep our lead this afternoon."
In Sunday morning's semi-final, the REDS were behind the UPEI Panthers 4-2 after four ends but scored singles in the next four ends for the victory.
In Sunday afternoon's gold medal game, the REDS held a 4-2 lead after four ends and stole a single in the fifth to lead 5-2.
The Sea-Hawks then put up two in the sixth and added singles in the seventh and eighth ends for the win.
"The other team made some great shots in the last end," said Stewart, of the Sea-Hawks.
"The guys played well, and the final game could've gone either way," said REDS' head coach Gary Wilson. "I'm proud of them."
Despite the loss in the conference championship, the Stewart rink will represent UNB and the AUS at the U SPORTS Championships, in Lethbridge, February 24-28.
"We're grateful and excited to be representing UNB at the U SPORTS Championships and look forward to bringing our best against the top teams in the country."
