REDS Outlast Sea-Hawks
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS and Memorial Sea-Hawks traded three-point baskets down the stretch, but in the end it was free throws that sealed a 71-64 win for the REDS on Friday night in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
UNB's Matthias Muscroft (Sussex, NB) and Mark Tobin (Mount Pearl, NL) both sunk crucial three-point baskets while Memorial's Norm Burry (Grafton, NB), a former RED, struck for the visitors.
Burry's three gave the Sea-Hawks a 63-61 lead with just over two minutes to play.
Muscroft hit his long-ball on the REDS' next possession, making it a 64-63 game. Then, with just over a minute to play, Tobin hit from long-range and the REDS went up 67-64.
Marcus Barnes (Kitchener, ON) and Brandon Laryea (Crawley, UK) each hit a pair of free throws in the dying moments to give the REDS their seven-point margin of victory.
Muscroft came off the UNB bench to lead all scorers with 20 points. He was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Tobin finished the night with 18 points while Laryea had an impressive double-double, finishing with 12 points, six assists and 20 rebounds.
Barnes dished out eight assists and dropped 15 points, three of which came on a dramatic three-point shot from just inside the half court stripe as the third quarter expired.
Flynn Boardman-Raffet (London, UK) led the Sea-Hawks with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Burry finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Josh Francis (Calgary, AB) chipped in eleven.
With the win, the REDS move into a tie for fourth place in the AUS standings with a record of 7-8. The Sea-Hawks, who led 31-30 at the half, fall to 8-7, good for third place.
The REDS and Sea-Hawks will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
