(FREDERICTON, NB) Marcus Barnes (Kitchener, ON) hit a pair of crucial free throws with less than six seconds remaining to lift the UNB REDS to a nail-biting 60-58 victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action, Friday night at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The Huskies dominated defensively in the second quarter, holding the REDS scoreless for almost eight minutes during a 9-0 run. Despite that, UNB clawed back to take a slim 25-22 lead into halftime.
Barnes led the REDS with 21 points, while teammates Conner Landell (St. Catharines, ON) and Mark Tobin (Mount Pearl, NL) contributed 14 points each.
Jasha'jaun Downey (North Preston, NS) paced the Huskies with 19 points in the loss.
The win moves UNB to 5-7 and into a two-way tie for fifth place in the AUS standings, while the Huskies drop to 4-8, tied for sixth.
The REDS will go on the road to face Dalhousie next Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00pm. The Huskies head to St. John's to take on Memorial.
