(FREDERICTON) The UNB REDS men's basketball team is adding another talented player to their 2023 recruiting class, guard Simba Bowora II.

A 6'4" Bowora, from Surrey, BC, has committed to joining the REDS by signing a U SPORTS Letter of Intent.

Currently showcasing his skills with CTA West Prep in Calgary, Bowora has earned recognition as a BioSteelAll-Canadian, solidifying his status as a highly regarded player.

"Simba checks off so many of the boxes that we look for when adding a new member to our program,” said UNB head coach Joe Salerno. “With his impressive size, athleticism, and experience in a highly competitive prep program, he is well-prepared to make the transition to the U SPORTS level."

Bowora's basketball journey has been marked by many achievements and accolades.

He excelled at Holy Cross Regional High School in Surrey, earning recognition as a city league all-star and establishing himself as one of the top players in his area.

Beyond his skills, Bowora brings a team-oriented mentality to the REDS.

"I feel like I bring resiliency as well as a dog mentality to the team, as an athlete who is willing to put the team before myself to create a successful program, said Bowora. “As a teammate, I’ll bring high energy and unwavering commitment, day in and day out."

Bowora has also proven his abilities on the US-based Amateur Athletic Union circuit, competing in the prestigious Adidas Gold Gauntlet tournament with UPrep Basketball.

Bowora says Coach Salerno played a vital role in his decision to choose UNB.

“Having a professional background, and coaching the Syrian men’s team, as well as being very transparent with me throughout the process was crucial when picking my next destination.”

Looking ahead, Bowora has set ambitious goals for himself and the REDS.
"I want to bring an AUS championship to UNB for sure and, one day, compete in the Final Eight with the ultimate aim of winning a national championship," he said.

In addition to his dedication to basketball, Bowora is committed to his academic pursuits. He has chosen to pursue Recreation and Sport Studies at UNB, allowing him to combine his passion for sports with his educational journey.
