Reds Add Power Forward Vovk
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds are adding power forward Ernest Vovk to their recruiting class of 2020.
The 6’5” Chipman, NB, native has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent, and will join the Reds ahead of the 2020-2021 Atlantic University Sport season.
Originally from Zhytomyr, in northern Ukraine, Vovk is completing his Grade 12 year at Chipman’s Forest Avenue School, where he averaged 36 points and 14 rebounds per game with the Crusaders (‘A’).
“He’s physically ready to play at the U SPORTS level,” said Reds head coach Brent Baker. “His perimeter footwork will need some work, but athletically, he should be able to make the transition from high school to U SPORTS in his rookie campaign.”
While his size says he’s a power forward, Vovk has a humorous side. “I can play shooting guard or point guard too.”
The Reds are stocked at the guard position, and Vovk knows that.
He’s looking forward to using his size and strength wherever the Reds need it.
“I like to drive into the paint, just go there and bash my way in there,” said Vovk. “It’s exciting for me. It’s going to be a good year for me, and I like this team. I saw a couple of their games. It’s a good team. The team chemistry is pretty good and I’m excited to play with them.”
Translated to English, the Ukrainian word “vovk” means “the wolf.”
Coach Baker is happy to have this wolf join his pack.
“Ernest brings a great work ethic and he’s definitely not allergic to the weight room. His size, strength, and shooting touch should make him a valuable asset at multiple positions.”
Vovk will study Arts while attending UNB.
