(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds scored an 87-77 win over the Cape Breton Capers Friday night, at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.

Will Legere(Amherst, NS) led the Varsity Reds, recording a double-double. He scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds.

"They made us fight for that one," said Legere. "They're a scrappy team. Credit to them, they held it to 10 in the end."

Javon Masters(Kitchener, ON) scored a game-high 24 points for UNB.

Paul Watson(Mississauga, ON) came off the Capers bench to score 19.

Martin Campbell(Upper Marlboro, MD), also off the bench, added 16.

UNB took a 23 point lead into the fourth quarter, then watched as the Capers chipped away.

Cape Breton scored 33 points in the final frame.

"It was a little sloppy in the fourth quarter," said Legere. "We definitely want to be able close games out better than we did tonight, but it's game one and 19 more to go."

"We just didn't give up, kept fighting, kept attacking," said Watson. "We knew we were getting the calls when we attacked the basket."

"We started a little slow, a little shaky. We cut the lead down, but it just wasn't enough," he said.

The Capers and Varsity Reds tangle again on Saturday.

Tip off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
