(FREDERICTON, NB) Javon Masters(Kitchener, ON) scored 45 points to lead the UNB Varsity Reds in a 92-78 win over the University of Cape Breton Capers in the final game of UNB's Eric Garland Tournament, on Sunday.

The win was UNB's third in as many days and gave the Varsity Reds their first Garland title in more than a decade.

"With all the work and grind and effort that we put into practice, it feels great," said Masters. "Especially playing three tough teams, for us to come out here and win the Garland for the first time in 14 years, it feels great."

The fifth-year guard added 10 rebounds to his 45-point performance for the double-double.

Masters was 14 for 18 from the field and 17 of 19 from the free throw line.

Will Legere(Amherst, NS) scored 20 points and freshman forward Ibrahima Doumbouya(Calgary, AB) also recorded a double-double, with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Martin Campbell(Upper Marlboro, MD) came off the Capers bench to score 21 points.

Starter Osman Omar(Mississauga, ON) added 15.

While Masters sported the most impressive stat line, he was quick to praise his teammates for their contributions.

"Everyone, one through twelve, stepped up," he said. "The bench was incredible, the fan support was incredible. We're going to take some time to enjoy this, but we've still got some work to do."

Masters was named the most valuable player of the Eric Garland Tournament, while Doumbouya was named to the tournament all-star team, along with the Capers' Campbell.

Next up for the Varsity Reds, a mid-October Ontario swing for pre-season games against Guelph, Toronto, and York.
