Calgary Centre Commits
6'7" Taner Parrington joining Varsity Reds
(CALGARY, AB) The UNB Varsity Reds are welcoming more Western Canadian talent, adding 6’7” centre Taner Parrinton, from Calgary, AB.
Parrington has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the Varsity Reds beginning in the 2017-18 season.
“Taner is a dynamic addition to our line-up,” said Varsity Reds head coach Brent Baker. “He’s a proven three-point threat, but he’s not afraid to do the heavy lifting in the low post.”
Parrington played high school basketball at Calgary’s Foothills Composite before spending a year at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
Last season, he averaged 17 points and almost 5.5 rebounds a game, while shooting 51% from the field for SAIT.
He has two years of U SPORTS eligibility remaining.
“I’ve chosen UNB not only because of the academic opportunity, but also because of the beautiful campus and the athletic facilities,” said Parrington. “I am very excited to play for UNB and look forward to the opportunity ahead.”
“He’s a very capable passer,” said Coach Baker, who feels Parrington, even as a newcomer, will provide leadership. “His veteran presence in the locker room will be a great addition to our culture moving forward.”
Parrington is the second Calgary product to commit to the Varsity Reds this week, joining 6’6” swingman Ibrahima Doumbouya, from Lester B. Pearson High School.
Both will join the Varsity Reds starting in the 2017-18 season.
