Calgary Hoops Star Commits To Varsity Reds
Doumbouya bringing game East
(CALGARY, AB) Go east young man.
Ibrahima Doumbouya is trading Calgary for Fredericton.
The 6’6” shooting guard has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the UNB Varsity Reds men’s basketball team.
Doumbouya’s signing was celebrated at Calgary’s Lester B. Pearson High School on Monday.
“I chose UNB because I think it’s a good place to go,” said Doumbouya. “We’re going to do a lot of good stuff. I’ll help them and they’ll help me.”
In just his second season at Pearson, Doumbouya helped the Patriots to a 9-1 regular season record before a 3-0 run to Calgary’s senior boys division one high school championship.
“He has an ability to put the ball on the floor, get to the basket and shoot the ball with range,” said Varsity Reds head coach Brent Baker. “He’s also physical and he plays at a very mature level on the court.”
Baker feels Doumbouya can contribute to the Varsity Reds right away.
“He’s not a freshman who’s going to just arrive on campus, he’s going to come in and make an impact right away,” said Baker. “He won’t need the learning curve that a regular freshman might, he’s going to come in and he’s going to make an impact.”
Doumbouya is excited to play in the Currie Center and has high expectations for himself and the VReds.
“My first year, my goal is to get Rookie of the Year,” he said. “Hopefully, before I leave, we’ll get a title too.”
“He’s coming from a really great minor program, a great high school program where he helped win a city title, you can’t ask for a better pedigree, so I’m pretty excited about bringing that to Fredericton,” said Coach Baker.
Ibrahima Doumbouya will join the Varsity Reds beginning in the 2017-18 season.
