Panthers Upset Varsity Reds

(CHARLOTTETOWN, PE) The seventh place UPEI Panthers upset the third place UNB Varsity Reds 92-77 Friday night, in Charlottetown.

 

The Panthers, now 5-9, were looking to bounce back after suffering two tough home losses last weekend.

 

The Varsity Reds are now 9-6.

 

UPEI wasted little time taking it to the VReds, going up by nine in the first quarter.

 

The Varsity Reds rallied, somewhat, trailing by just a single point at the half.

 

UNB was led by Hess Mayele(Montreal, QC) with 18 points and nine rebounds. Donnavan Hastings came off the bench to score 19 points and add four rebounds.

 

The Panthers were led by captain Tyler Scott(Halifax, NS) who scored a game-high 29 points. He added five rebounds and a pair of steals. Shavon Gayle(Windsor, ON) added 13 points, five rebounds and five steals.

 

The Subway Player of the Game from the Panthers was Dut Dut(Ottawa, ON) who registered a game-high 19 rebounds in a double-double performance.

 

The Varsity Reds played without Jamaal Potopsingh(Brampton, ON) and reigning Atlantic University Sport MVP Javon Masters(Kitchener, ON). Masters suffered an ankle injury last weekend, and had hoped to return to action this weekend.

 

The Panthers host the Varsity Reds again Saturday. Game time is 8:00pm.
