(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds completed a weekend sweep of the UPEI Panthers, with a 93-84 win, Saturday night, at UNB's Currie Center.
Javon Masters(Kitchener, ON) scored 17 for the home team, moving into fifth place on the Atlantic University Sport career scoring list, passing former Saint Mary's stand-out Will Njoku.
Masters now has 1674 points.
Jamaal Potopsingh(Brampton, ON) led the VReds with 19 points.
Milorad Sedlarevic(Vesenice, SLOV.) scored a game-high 23 points for the Panthers.
UNB led 26-11 after the first quarter, and 48-40 at the half.
The Panthers scored 30 points in the final quarter, but it was hardly enough, as they fell to 1-3 on the season.
The Varsity Reds improve to 2-2.
"It's a big win for this group," said Varsity Reds head coach Brent Baker. "We needed to experience winning, because we've got two tough road games coming up."
Potopsingh continues to impress.
The freshman forward was 8-of-12 from the field, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
"It's all about effort," said Potopsingh. "Our team is doing an excellent job of swinging the ball, getting back on defence, getting on the ground for loose balls, winning the hustle plays. That's what it boils down to."
While the Varsity Reds celebrated, the Panthers left the court dejected.
"We just didn't defend good," said Sedlarevic. "They were up 15 points in the first quarter, and we just couldn't catch them."
When told about his continued climb up the AUS career scoring list, Masters was wide-eyed… but only for a moment.
"That's crazy, man… it's a big accomplishment," said Master. "But I'm just happy that we got the win tonight. Everyone played very well tonight. We stuck to the game-plan, like last night, and came out with a lot of energy."
Along with his 17 points, Masters led the Varsity Reds with seven rebounds and seven assists.
Stephon Smith(New Orleans, LOU) came off the bench to score 15 for UNB.
Dut Dut(Ottawa, ON) had 18 for UPEI.
The Varsity Reds take on Saint Mary's, in Halifax, on Friday.
UPEI travels to Acadia.
