Freshman Javon Masters leads UNB to 82-65 win over StFX

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds hit the court against the St Francis Xavier X-men, for the team's second matchup in the Eric Garland tournament.

Both teams started off the first quarter strong with back to back play between the teams. The X-Men's Rodrigo Madera secured the bulk of the rebounds, led to a 24 - 20 lead as the second quarter began.

More shot for shot play in the second had both sides raking up 17 points respectively. Stellar play from the Varsity Reds Javon Masters helped to keep the game within reach.  UNB shot 44.4% from the floor and chalked up 11 fouls. At the end of the second the score was 41 - 37 for St FX.

UNB came out flying in the third quarter. Masters and guard Daniel Quirion draining two quick threes to put the team out in front. The momentum started tumbling into UNB's favour, as the crowd increased in volume. The fast paced play of Javon Masters influenced the rest of Varsity Reds to shoot 10 / 17 in the third quarter taking them to a 65 -51 lead.

The fourth quarter spelled more of the same. UNB's William McFee scored 6 points for a game total of 19. Masters added a single basket to finish at a game total of 22. The final score UNB 82 ST.FX 65 thanks to the solid play of the Varsity Reds and newcomer Javon Masters.

Masters, a first year player from Kingston, Ontario is a welcome addition to the V-Reds line-up and Coach Brent Baker is thrilled at his arrival.  "He's an energy guy, he brings a little bit of swagger, but plays with a certain maturity on the court," said Baker.

This win puts the Varsity Reds in a good position as they face off against the University of Laval in their next game - tip off is 3:00pm Sunday at the Richard J. Currie Centre.
