With regular season quickly approaching, the preseason is well under way. The Varsity Reds men’s basketball team, with a record of three wins and three losses, The score of the six games were; UNB 93-86 UQAM, UNB 110-107 StFX in double overtime, SMU 97-90 UNB, Acadia 83-79 UNB, Lee Academy 91-79 UNB, and a win against Vanier 97-53 for UNB.
From their challenges in preseason the V-Reds are looking at a very balanced regular season schedule. The preseason is important to the V-Reds because they get to see a scope of what they are up against for the upcoming year; it also gives coaches the chance to see how well certain players preform in their positions and how well the team operates in a game, rather than just in game-like scenarios.
When asked about how he thought his team would fare in their conference this year, Coach Baker said, “I'm pretty optimistic about what we have, and I’ve just got to make sure the team believes we have something special, because we do have something special this year.” Baker also commented that it’s the most level playing field in the conference within the last few years.
Some notable high scores during the preseason include Michael Fazzolari, who is putting up 10-15 points in the paint per game. Robert Linton also had a big game this past weekend with thirty-one points, 18 of which from outside the arc, on Sunday. The V-Reds also have a couple players bouncing back from injuries and a surgery; Will McFee who was out with a concussion is expected back on the court within a week or so, and Nick Clarke is doing well after an early summer minor surgery. Keep an eye on the V-Reds as they play in the Laval Tournament this upcoming weekend, keeping up with their tenacious preseason.
