Annual Accreon Eric Garland Tournament
September 30, 2012
The annual Accreon Eric Garland Tournament was a great pre-season opener for the host squad as they took two of three games over the weekend.
In addition to the Varsity Reds, the tournament featured the St. FX X-Men, Saint Mary’s Huskies, and the Université du Québec à Montréal Citadins.
Head Coach Brent Baker was very pleased with his team’s performance and how hard they played throughout the tournament.
“I take a lot of positives away from this weekend. We’re a young team and only have one senior, Dan Quirion. So I’m very, very impressed with what our guys did. Ryan Smith (Dalhousie, NB) had a real breakout weekend and MacKenzie Washburn (Fredericton, NB) had a great double-overtime game last night. We had a lot of good things come out of this exhibition weekend.”
In UNB’s tournament opener on Friday night the Varsity Reds defeated the Université du Québec à Montréal 93-86. In that matchup, Aaron O’Brien (Pasedena, NL) totalled 23 points; Dan Quirion (Moncton, NB) 20; and guard Will McFee (Northbridge, Australia) had 17.
Their second game was a wild, seesaw thriller - it took double overtime to beat the St. FX X-Men 110-107. Jordan Irvine, a 6’4” third year forward from Woodstock, NB, was the high scorer for the Varsity Reds with 31 points. Irvine also pulled down 16 rebounds on the night while senior guard Quirion had 22 points. Matt Daley from Belledune, NB, made a big impact from the guard position with 20 pts.
In the final game of the tournament UNB took it on the chin as the Saint Mary’s Huskies pulled away in the final minutes to win the game 97-90. Tournament all-star Quirion shot the lights out with 31 points including several crowd pleasing three pointers. Jordan Irvine from Riceville, NB, also named to the all-star team had 16 points and pulled down six rebounds.
“I was impressed with our tenacity, I thought we really fought the whole game and battled back time and again …. But you can only do that so many times….. I thought our team showed a lot of resilience and a lot of intestinal fortitude throughout the whole game and that’s a good step forward,” continued Baker.
The Varsity Reds will take to the road for several more exhibition games before they host their AUS season opener at the RJCC against Acadia on November 9th and 10th. Complete schedules can be found at www.vreds.ca
