Varsity Reds defeat St. FX X-Men

The Varsity Reds defeated the X-Men tonight in double overtime at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER by a score of 110-107.
More than 1,200 fans attended the game, one of several in the annual Eric Garland Tournament.
Down by 18 points after the first quarter, the V-Reds slowly closed the gap to 11 at the half, then within four after the third quarter. The end of regulation time saw the V-Reds and X-Men tied at 89 apiece to force the game into overtime. At the end of the first overtime both teams were tied once again with 99 points on the scoreboard, taking the game into a second overtime. UNB was able to hang on for the win after the X-Men missed their last shot with 4.8 seconds left on the clock.
Jordan Irvine, a 6’4” third year forward from Woodstock, NB, was the high scorer for the Varsity Reds with 31 points. Irvine also pulled down 16 rebounds on the night while senior guard Daniel Quirion from Moncton had 22 points. Matthew Daley from Belledune, NB, made a big impact from the guard position with 20 pts.
The V-Reds are now 2-0 for the tournament, having defeated the Université du Québec à Montréal on Friday evening 93-86. In that matchup, Aaron O’Brien (Pasedena, NL) totalled 23 points; Quirion 20; and guard William McFee (Northbridge, Australia) had 17.
UNB will meet perennial powerhouse the Saint Mary’s Huskies, also 2-0 in the tournament, on Sunday at 3pm in the RJCC.
