V-Reds cruise to win over Sea Hawks

The Varsity Reds took on the Memorial Sea Hawks tonight in game one of two in their last home games of the season.
Right off the tip, the V-Reds put their hearts on the court; with Michael Fazzolari keeping the ball in their possession by diving out of bounds, keeping the ball in play; the tone of the game was set.
The first quarter had the V-Reds locking things down defensively with big steals from Matthew Daley and Mark Matheson that transitioned in to break away points from Jordan Irvine, points in the paint from Michael Fazzolari and Will McFee sinking a three.
Keeping the Sea Hawks to 12 points the first quarter went to the V-Reds, 18-12.
The second quarter, the V-Reds dug in their heels offensively and began putting points on the board with big rebounds from Nick Clarke, Ryan Smith and Daley and assists from McFee and Irvine.
The second quarter the V-reds outscored 22-14 bringing the half to an end with the V-Reds leading 40-26.
Getting a little too comfortable in the third quarter, the V-Reds started slowing down. The Sea Hawks capitalized and ran the court earning some break-away points.
Scoring a total of 17 points in the third, the V-Reds missed second chance opportunities but as the quarter continued, came back defensively with steals from Daniel Quirion. The V-Reds took the third quarter with the score 57-49.
The V-Reds went 23 points in the fourth quarter, keeping the Sea Hawks landlocked, taking the game 80-64.
Player of the game for UNB, with 30 points, Jordan Irvine also had three rebounds, two assists and a big block. Player of the game from MUN, Caleb Gould had a total of 14 points, 8 rebounds and two steals.
With thoughts on tomorrow’s game, Coach Baker said, “hopefully everyone brings their best to the court, but regardless we have to play our schedule and keep an eye on the teams across the league as well.”
Facing the Sea Hawks again tomorrow, The V-Reds will be at the RJCC toughing out the storm, with the women’s game beginning at 1pm and the men’s at 3pm.
The men’s volleyball team will also be in action tomorrow at the RJCC at 7pm hoping take the Dalhousie Tigers in game two for the AUS championship.
