University Community Mourns the Passing of Leo â??Kirtâ?? Mombourquette

Kirt Mombourquette, a long-time assistant coach with the UNB Varsity Reds men's basketball team, passed away suddenly on Sunday, Oct. 2, in Fredericton. He was 37 years old.

Kirt was born in Sydney, N.S. and played basketball for both Cape Breton University and the University of New Brunswick. An outstanding student-athlete, he earned his Bachelor of Education at UNB in 2002 and also achieved CIS Academic All-Canadian status.

Kirt spent many years as an instructor with the UNB summer basketball camps here in Fredericton and joined the coaching staff in 2005. He was also a full-time physical education teacher at Connaught Street School.

An avid sports enthusiast, Kirt loved spending time with family and friends. He was a wonderful father who adored his family.

Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, today and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. at Sunset Church with Rev. Gary Cowper officiating.


The flags will be lowered in front of Sir Howard Douglas Hall on Thursday.
