UNB suffers heartbreaking one-point loss to Huskies
The UNB men’s basketball team brought their 'A' game to the court Saturday when they took on the Saint Mary’s Huskies in their final home game this season at the Richard J. Currie Center.

The game started off in UNB’s favour when Alex DesRoches won the tip-off and Michael Fosu nailed the first basketball of the game for the Reds.

The first two quarters were in UNB’s favor as they pushed the Huskies and dominated play in the half.

“We can only play the game in front of us and that’s what the kids did today,” said UNB head coach Brent Baker.

The Varsity Reds finished out the first half with a 40-37 lead over the Huskies.

Both teams would tie a high scoring third quarter at 27-27, giving the V-Reds at three point lead going into the final quarter.

The Huskies would come from behind in the forth quarter, outscoring UNB 23-19 to give the Huskies a one-point victory.

“I think both teams could have kept calling time-outs until infinity here and we still would have had a one point game both ways all the time,” said Baker.

The last thirty seconds of the fourth quarter saw multiple timeouts called by both UNB and SMU, and after each timeout, both teams would bank a basket or shot, and lead the other by one point.

By the last timeout, however, UNB was pushing hard for the victory, but the Huskies in the last 10 seconds put the ball past the V-Reds, and nailed the final basket to win the game 87-86.

“We had the lead the whole game, except the last minute,” said Varsity Red, Alex DesRoches, “We must have done something right.”
