UNB Varsity Reds proud to support Breast Cancer research

The UNB Varsity Reds are pleased to announce that through the nine events taking place February 9th-13 they will be raising money for Breast Cancer research.

In an initiative led by UNB women’s basketball head coach Jeff Speedy - CIS women’s basketball “Shoot for the Cure”- the Varsity Reds are now able to expand their efforts to three  sports: men’s hockey, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s, and women’s volleyball to help raise awareness and funds for research.

The fundraising activities will kick off on February 9th as the annual Mark Jeffrey Game partners for “Pink in the Rink” night when the Varsity Reds take on cross town rivals the STU Tommies at 7:00pm.

On the weekend, Feb. 11-13, the theme continues at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym with the 3rd annual “Shoot for the Cure”.  The UPEI Panthers are in town for four basketball games: Friday night the women’s game is at 6:00pm while the men play at 8:00pm – on Saturday game times are 1:00pm and 3:00pm.

Saturday and Sunday the men’s and women’s volleyball teams continue the fundraising initiative with the 2nd annual “Dig Pink”.  On Saturday the women’s team host the Cape Breton Capers at 6:30pm while the men’s team goes up against the Dal Tigers at 8:30pm.  On Sunday, the final day of “Pink” the women play against St. FX at 2:00pm while the men’s team has a repeat matchup with the Tigers at 4:00pm.

“Cancer has affected us all in so many ways. As members of society the Varsity Reds want to help effect change, and our whole program wants to be engaged in playing a part in raising funds for research. What started as an initiative of CIS women’s basketball has turned into something much bigger on our campus and other campuses across Canada,” commented athletic director Kevin Dickie.

The Varsity Reds will be sending out two further media releases with additional details on the hockey “Pink in the Rink” and the “Shoot for the Cure” and “Dig Pink” events at the L.B. Gym.
