Wright sparks UNB men to basketball upset

AUS | V-Reds women drop pair of road games

Andrew Wright contributed 31 points and six assists to help the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds to a 95-81 victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies in an Atlantic University Sport men's basketball conference four-point game Sunday in Halifax.

Daniel Quirion and William McFee chipped in with 21 and 20 points, respectively, for the V-Reds. Joey Harwood drove for 46 points for the Huskies while Miguel Pink scored 11 more.

The V-Reds rebounded from a 98-56 loss Saturday to the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in Antigonish. Terry Thomas tossed in 19 points for the X-Men, who led 40-26 at the intermission. Charlie Spurr added 16 more.

McFee replied with 13 points, Dustin Anthony 12 and Quirion nine for the V-Reds, who have 12 points and move into a fifth-place tie with the Acadia Axemen. The Huskies are fourth with 18 points.

The UNB women's team - ranked fifth in the country with an 8-1 record heading into the weekend - dropped two road games to fall into second place.

The V-Reds have 22 points, six back of the Cape Breton University Capers with three games in hand, however.

Saturday, Ashley Stephen's 16 points and 12 rebounds sparked St. FX to a 91-73 victory over the V-Reds, who trailed 50-32 at the break. Kirsten Jones dropped in 14 more. Claire Colborne countered with 22 points, Amanda Sharpe 19 and Megan Corby 11 for UNB.

Yesterday, the Saint Mary's Huskies beat the V-Reds 82-73 in a four-pointer thanks to 33 points and eight assists by Justine Colley and 25 points by Fredericton native Robbi Daley.

Sharpe scored 18 points for UNB, down 70-50 after the third quarter. Laura Fowler helped out with 12 while Megan and Leah Corby each had nine. Colborne was held to seven points.

Both UNB teams host St. FX on Saturday and Sunday at the UNB main gym.
