UNB Varsity Reds Academic All Canadian Celebration.
Fredericton – The UNB Varsity Reds proudly announced the recipients of the 2009-10 Academic All Canadian Awards at a luncheon today at the Aitken Centre.
President Eddy Campbell along with Deans, Directors and Friends of the Varsity Reds were in attendance as student-athletes received their official certificates of achievement from Canadian Interuniversity Sport. Each award winner also received a scholarship from the University of New Brunswick.
In the 2009-10 academic year 60 of 183 student-athletes achieved the academic standing of 80% or better (3.5 gpa at UNB) while competing for the Varsity Reds thus earning CIS Academic All Canadian status.
Special mention was made of Saint John native Jacob Kilpatrick who is a member of the men’s volleyball team. Jacob graduated last year with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and is a four-time Academic All Canadian. The Saint John native has returned to UNB this year for his final year of eligibility and is currently studying for a Diploma in Technology Management Entrepreneur. He is the President elect for the third time of the UNB Athletes’ Council.
The awards were handed out by university president Eddy Campbell and athletic director Kevin Dickie who had this to say about the program’s achievements. “Anytime you have one-third of your student-athletes entering into the area of academic excellence it is certainly something to be proud of. No question our goal is to win in the sport arena but we want to do it the right way by also representing our community with pride and class while maintaining a standard of excellence in the classroom.”
