REDS Sweep Halifax Double-Headers
(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS improved to 8-and-2 this season, sweeping a pair of double-headers in Halifax on the weekend.
On Saturday, the REDS took the opener of their double-header with Saint Mary’s.
The REDS jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead but were forced to hold off the late-rallying Huskies.
Leading 9-1 in top of the seventh, the REDS allowed Saint Mary’s to score five times but held on for a 9-6 win.
In the second game, Adam Wenzel allowed just four hits in a complete game shut-out on the mound. The REDS won 4-0.
“Having a great defence behind me made my job a lot easier,” said Wenzel. “I can just go out to the mound and let them eat. It was a great team win.”
Matt Dignam and Nick St. Pierre each hit RBI triples to pace the UNB offence.
UNB beat Dalhousie 6-1 and 7-6 in Sunday’s double-header.
In the opener, Ryan Galbraith pitched well in holding the Tigers at bay. He even pitched out of a bases loaded with none out situation in the fifth inning.
In the series closer, UNB jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but Dal scratched their way back in until a Connor Hill sacrifice fly pushed the winning run across the plate in seventh inning.
“I thought it was a good weekend and we worked hard to get four wins,” said REDS’ head coach Kevin McCarthy. “That puts us in a position to fight for first place in the final six games of the season.”
With the four wins, UNB is in first place in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association standings
“We were selfless on offence and improved a lot situationally and on the base paths,” said Coach McCarthy. “With some minor tweaks, we are confident we can play some good baseball down the stretch.”
The REDS are back home this coming weekend, with double-headers against Acadia on Saturday and Holland College on Sunday.
