Grzesniak And McCallum Named REDS Athletes Of The Year
(FREDERICTON, NB) Carolina Grzesniak, of the women’s soccer team, and Kale McCallum, of the men’s hockey team, were named the UNB REDS female and male Athletes of the Year Tuesday night in the second of two REDS Awards ceremonies this week.
Grzesniak led the REDS with four goals as UNB registered their best regular season finish in more than a decade and appeared in the conference championship game.
McCallum led all Atlantic University Sport defencemen in scoring and was second in the nation, helping the REDS to a seventh consecutive conference title.
Soccer’s Evana Eyubeh and hockey’s Peter Reynolds were named UNB’s Rookies of the Year while Katie Butts, of the women’s basketball team, and hockey’s Cole MacKay were named co-recipients of the prestigious Garnet Copeland Award for top all-round student-athlete.
MacKay and Eric Jean, of the men’s swimming team, were named co-recipients of the Brunswickan Award which honours the graduating student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average after the first term.
Women’s soccer’s Jon Crossland was named REDS Coach of the Year and retiring Aitken Centre box office manager Vicky Melanson was presented with the James Born Award, for dedication and long service to athletics at UNB.
Kylee Speedy, of the women’s basketball team, and Isaac Jewett, of the men’s volleyball team, were recognized with Unsung Hero Awards.
On Monday, the REDS honoured a group of teams that included baseball, cheer, dance, field hockey, football, lacrosse, rugby and tennis.
