139 REDS Names Academic All-Canadians
(FREDERICTON, NB) 139 UNB REDS student-athletes have been recognized as U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians for the 2023-2024 academic year.
The 139 come from 252 UNB student-athletes who consumed U SPORTS eligibility during the 2023-24 season, or 55% of them.
“These young women and men deserve to be congratulated and celebrated,” said REDS’ Athletic Director Jeff Speedy. “They work as hard on the academic side of things as they do on the athletics. Being a student-athlete isn’t easy. Being one who achieves Academic All-Canadian status is a wonderful accomplishment.”
To qualify as an Academic All-Canadian, a student-athlete must maintain an average of 80% or better while competing in a U SPORTS level sport.
“I’m extremely proud of this group,” added Speedy. “They’ve all shown great commitment to the full experience as a student-athlete and this is a small reward for their dedication and hard-work.”
Identifying standouts in such a distinguished group isn’t easy, but two student-athletes are being recognized as top female and male student-athletes.
Jayda Veinot, while earning a 4.2 Grade Point Average in her Master’s of Applied Health studies, led the REDS’ women’s basketball team to the conference championship game for the first time in over a decade and was named Atlantic University Sport and U SPORTS MVP.
Cole MacKay, who held a 4.2 GPA in his Business Administration studies, was a key contributor with the men’s hockey team in their perfect 43-0 season, one which saw them win conference and national championships.
“Jayda and Cole are shining examples of what we hope REDS student-athletes will be,” said Speedy. “They’re dedicated to excellence in their studies and their sport, they challenge their teammates to be better every day, and they’ve shown they care about the community, on campus and beyond.”
