REDS Fall Short Against X-Men
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS held the STFX X-Men to a tight first half before falling short, 8-4 on Sunday evening at UNB’s BMO Centre.
Despite Adam Gallop’s impressive four-goal performance, the X-Men blitzed the REDS on a six-goal run that UNB was unable to respond to.
Gallop opened the scoring at 10:22 of the first quarter when he fired home a shot from the left wing to give UNB the 1-0 lead.
On the ensuing faceoff, Nick Parsons won it to himself, sprinted down the field, and connected with Gallop for his second goal of the game.
STFX managed to break the ice late in the first quarter when Aidan Carr scored, narrowing the gap to 2-1.
The REDS began the second quarter with a man-up opportunity, capitalizing on the situation as Morgan McKinnon found Gallop open on the wing, and he fired a shot past STFX's goalie, Kiegan Horne, to extend UNB's lead to 3-1.
However, this is when the STFX offense sprang to life. They struck back with three goals before halftime, with two by Kale Gordon and one from Max Janousek, turning the score around to 4-3 in favor of the X-Men.
Janousek continued to shine in the third quarter, netting his second goal of the game. Carr and Sam Perkins also scored, solidifying the X-Men's lead at 7-3.
Gallop responded by adding his fourth goal of the night just before the end of the quarter, reducing the deficit to 7-4.
In the fourth quarter, the REDS made a valiant effort to stage a comeback, but their attempts were thwarted by Horne, who made six of his 13 saves during the final frame.
Both teams exchanged goals in the fourth, with Janousek completing a hat-trick for STFX, and Jacob Wilkins adding a goal for the REDS.
Nevertheless, it was the X-Men who sealed the victory, handing UNB their third loss of the season, dropping their record to 3-3.
Zach Cogswell, in the loss, made 10 saves in net for the REDS.
Looking ahead, UNB will hit the road for a pair of away games next weekend. They'll kick things off with a rematch against STFX on October 28th at 4:00pm, before making their way to Sackville, NB, where they'll take on the Mount Allison Mounties on October 29th at 2:00pm.
