(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS came out on home field Sunday afternoon and dominated the UKC Blue Devils 57-0 in their Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association home opener.

The REDS jumped out to an early lead and wouldn’t let up, putting in a complete effort to shutout the Blue Devils.

“It felt so good to get this win today,” said REDS’ veteran back Megan Stewart. “UKC gave us a real hard run for our money, even though they were down people. It was just, overall, a really great game.”

It was a scoring by committee effort from UNB as the REDS had tries scored by seven different players.

UNB was led by Stewart and Alicia Simmie who each had two tries.

“It was an all-around team effort today,” said Stewart. “I felt like I was able to go on those runs just because I didn’t have to spend as much time tackling. We were all up on our marks and each of us did our jobs today which allowed me to make mine look east.”

Kate Bennett was also stellar Sunday, converting six kicks and scoring a try of her own.

The REDS now shift their attention to Thursday evening when they host the St. Thomas Tommies in the inaugural Mary Cronin Memorial Game.

Game time is 5:00pm. It will be played at UNB’s College Field.

“We’re focused on coming out and playing as hard as possible Thursday because of who we’re playing for,” said Stewart. “If we put in an effort like today, we’ll be successful for sure.”
