REDS Win At Mt. A
(SACKVILLE, NB) The UNB REDS opened their 2022 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association campaign with a dominant 36-19 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday afternoon.
The REDS we’re led by first-year player Ellie Cross, who scored three tries in her collegiate debut. Veteran back Kate Bennet also scored a try and converted three kicks on the day.
“For our first effort out today, our team came out firing and playing really well,” said REDS head coach Kevin Wilson.“Our experienced players played very good and were supplemented by our newcomers who helped us dominate the first half territorially and possession wise.”
In the second half, the REDS came out a bit flat, but substitutes Alex Morrell and Ella Myers came in and made an immediate impact. The two made some key hits right away. That helped UNB take control of the game. Morrell would also add a try in the second half to help the REDS secure a comfortable lead.
“The pace of the game changed with subs Ella Myers and Alex Morrell making a huge impact in the second half,” said REDS captain Katherine Maxwell. “Their energy revived the team to finish strong.”
The reigning six-time ACAA women’s rugby champions hit the road again next weekend, heading to PEI to face first-year squad Holland College on Sunday, at 2:00pm.
