BASE: REDS Sweep X-Men
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS opened their 2022 Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association season with a dominant performance against the STFX X-Men, winning both games of Saturday’s double-header.
UNB opened the day with a convincing 12-2 over the X-Men, thanks to an explosive second inning, led by Nick St-Pierre who had two hits and three RBI in game one.
Rylan Matchett got the start on the mound for UNB, pitching four innings, two scoreless, and striking out three.
“We looked good today,” said Matchett. “We’ve got a lot of young talent and there’s lots of good pitching and hitting on this team. I’m really looking forward to another good season here and chasing a fourth [ACBA] title.”
In game two, UNB again used an offensive outburst on route to a 14-4 win to end the day.
Matthew Oram scored the victory on the mound for the REDS, whoused a monstrous eight-run fourth inning to secure the victory.
“It felt really good to get out there again,” said REDS captain and first basemen Jack Ryan. “We had a challenging STFX team that we managed to put together a solid game plan for and executed really well today. We’re just excited to be back on the field and back in our REDS uniforms. We have a lot of new faces this year, but it’s really exciting. We have a solid team again and we’re really excited to make another run at it.”
UNB will look to continue their hot start on Sunday afternoon when they face the Holland College Hurricanes, in another double-header at Thompson Field. Game times are 1:00 and 3:30pm.
“We’re hoping to have the same kind of success against Holland,” said Ryan “They’re looking like a strong team again this year. At the end of the day, we put together our game plans and come to the field ready to go. Today we did that, and we’re going to try and do that the rest of the season.”
