144 REDS Named Academic All-Canadian
The UNB REDS are celebrating another big class of U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians.
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS are celebrating another big class of U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians.
A total of 144 REDS student-athletes earned the status during the 2021-2022 academic year.
The 144 Academic All-Canadians comes from a total of 275 UNB student-athletes who consumed U SPORTS eligibility during the 2021-2022 academic year, or just over 52% of all UNB student-athletes.
To qualify as an Academic All-Canadian, a student-athlete must maintain an average of 80% or better while competing in a varsity level sport.
“It never ceases to amaze me how so many of our REDS student-athletes achieve this status,” said REDS Executive Director John Richard. “Being a student-athlete is not easy. I know. I was one. The amount of training and competition they’re involved in on top of their studies, which is a full-time job itself, is incredible. That so many are able to do so well at both is inspiring.”
In such a distinguished class, identifying exceptional individuals is not easy. But two student-athletes are being recognized above the rest.
Jennifer Moore (Hamilton, ON), a member of the women’s swimming team, who posted a 4.3 grade point average in first year of a Masters of Arts in Experimental Psychology program, is the REDS’ top female Academic All-Canadian, while Rylan Parenteau (Saskatoon, SK), then a member of the men’s hockey team, earned the same GPA during the final year of his Geological Engineering degree program.
“Jennifer and Rylan are in very good company,” said Richard. “Both were stellar students in 2021-22 and both were incredible athletes. Jennifer won individual conference championships and Rylan was a conference all-star while helping UNB to another conference team title.”
“I’m extremely proud of all 144 of our Academic All-Canadians,” said Richard. “This group is exactly who we want here. Young women and men who are dedicated to their sport and their studies, working towards being the best at both.”
“And congratulations to our coaches, team staff, our REDS administration, the various people from across the many faculties and so many more,” added Richard. “These student-athletes do the majority of the work, but there is a lot of support throughout our system and beyond, and I’m equally as proud of those that are part of the supporting cast here.”
