(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds are proud to announce that 90 student-athletes have been named as U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians for 2018-19.

90, which includes members of the women’s hockey team for the first time in a decade, represents 34% of the Reds 265 student-athletes who consumed U SPORTS eligibility last season.

Academic All-Canadian status celebrates earning at least an 80% average while participating as a varsity level athlete.

“We are extremely proud of this group of student-athletes,” said John Richard, UNB’s Director of Athletics. “They have worked extremely hard as athletes, but more importantly, they’ve worked extremely hard as students. They’re as diligent and as dedicated in the classroom as they are on their chosen fields of play. Balancing academics and athletics at the varsity level is not easy, but this group has not only found that balance, they’ve mastered it.”

Siobhan Fitzpatrick, of the women’s volleyball team, and Evan Barker, of the men’s soccer team, were recognized as the top female and male Academic All-Canadians.

Fitzpatrick, a first-year Red but a fifth-year student-athlete, recorded a 4.1 GPA as a PhD candidate in Clinical Psychology. Barker, a third-year Red in 2018-19, recorded a 4.2 GPA in UNB’s Faculty of Management.
