Cassie McCallum, of the women’s hockey team, is the UNB REDS/Monks & Jonesie female Athlete of the Week.
The 4th year REDS goaltender was a key player for the REDS in their two losses at the U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship in Elmira, Ontario.
In Friday’s 2-0 quarter-final loss to the University of Toronto, McCallum stopped 37 of 39 shots and was named UNB’s player of the game.
In Saturday’s 5-1 consolation semi-final loss to UBC, she made another 37 saves, this time on 42 shots.
“Cassie was the backbone of our team at the national championship tournament,” said REDS’ head coach Sarah Hilworth. “She stepped up in both games, making incredible saves and giving us a chance to compete at the highest level. Her composure, athleticism, and leadership in net was outstanding.”
