Shackell To Swim With REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) In the wake of their annual on-campus recruiting camp weekend, the UNB REDS women’s swimming team is naming freestyle and butterfly swimmer Maggie Shackell as the first member of their recruiting class of 2025.
The 17-year-old, from Toronto, ON, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2025-2026 Atlantic University Sport season.
Shackell, who specializes in sprint and middle-distance races in freestyle and butterfly, is completing her Grade 12 year at Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School, in North York, ON.
She’s a member of the Toronto Swim Club and, formerly, of the North York Aquatics Club.
Shackell is a veteran of a number of club, provincial, and national championship events, including Ontario high school championship meets.
“I’m a very positive individual and really thrive in uplifting environments,” said Shackell. “I feel that creating this environment is important for the success of the team as a whole and brings people together. I train the best when I’m having fun and enjoying what I’m doing.”
“Maggie’s resume is impressive,” said REDS’ head coach Marta Belsh. “Her performances at national age group championships and provincial championship meets have been developing and progressing. We feel she can push that progress to another level in our program.”
Shackell says her goals include reaching qualifying standards for the U SPORTS Championships as well as working to foster the next generation of swimmers to excel in the sport.
Shackell will study Kinesiology while attending UNB.
