REDS Rout Hurricanes
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS downed the Holland College Hurricanes in ACAA women's rugby Sunday, at UNB's College Field, scoring a 65-5 win.
Sisters Cassie and Lilly Innis powered the UNB victory, with two tries each. Emily Thornton converted three kicks for the REDS.
It was UNB's first home game of the season, after securing road wins against STU and Mount Allison. Holland was also 2-and-0 entering the contest.
The Hurricanes finished the 2023 regular season undefeated 8-0 and went on to win the 2023 ACAA banner. This was not only their first loss of the season, but their first since 2022.
UNB dominated possession early as Madison Tingley and Ella Myers sparked multiple deep drives into Holland territory.
At the half, UNB lead 31-0 thanks to its stifling defense and disciplined passing.
The REDS picked up where they left off after the break, with tries from Raine Gilmore and both Innis sisters in the first few minutes of the second half.
Ella McLean made a try for Holland mid-way through the second half. She was a bright spot for the Hurricanes, also thwarting several UNB breakaways on defence.
Other REDS to score were Ella Daigle, Lauren Kennedy, Emery Bowland, Hannah Loggie, Kate Grant and Mika Kenny.
UNB now sits alone atop the ACAA women's rugby standings at 3-and-0. Holland College is second at 2-and-1.
The REDS and Hurricanes will meet again in a week's time in Charlottetown.
