(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB Varsity Reds needed five sets, but they earned their first win of the 2017-18 season, a 3-2 victory over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or.
The win came in AUS/RSEQ interlock play, in Halifax.
UNB won with scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-13.
The V-Reds used an aggressive serving style on route to a 25-18 win.
Serving was a big factor for both sides in the second set, with plenty of points coming off aces or errors.
Sherbrooke took the second set 25-21.
Leading 16-15 at the technical time-out in the third set, UNB scored five straight coming out of the break. The Varsity Reds won the third 25-19.
The Varsity Reds came out with a hard swinging attack to start the fourth set, and jumped to an early 8-3 lead.
Sherbrooke was able to hang on, and made a run of their own, narrowing the gap to 13-12.
The Vert et Or took the fourth 25-22.
The fifth set was tight, with UNB taking a 13-11 edge late and holding on for a 15-13 win and the 3-2 victory.
UNB's Drew Duncan(Winnipeg, MB) was named the Subway Player of the Game.
Duncan recorded nine digs in the match.
Pascal McCarthy(Fredericton, NB) led UNB with 17 kills and 5 service aces.
The Varsity Reds face Laval at 6:00pm on Saturday, as the first of three AUS/RSEQ interlock weekends continues.
