Julio Ferandez of the UNB Varsity Reds men’s volleyball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 17, 2013.
Fernandez, a fourth-year student from Los Teques, Venezuela, was named the playoff most valuable player this past weekend as the Varsity Reds won their best two-of-three Subway AUS men’s volleyball championship series with the Dalhousie Tigers in two straight matches.
Fernandez, also named the league most valuable player for the second year in a row, had an outstanding weekend.
In Friday’s 3-1 win over the Tigers in Halifax, Julio was named the Subway Player of the Match with 13 kills, eight digs and two blocks.
In Sunday’s rematch in Fredericton, Fernandez electrified the record crowd of over 1,100 fans at the Richard J. Currie Center with a game-high 18 kills. He also added five digs, two blocks and a service ace as UNB captured their second AUS banner in the past three years.
The Varsity Reds will now advance to the CIS championship hosted by Laval, March 1-3 in Quebec City.
