UNB unable to get past McMaster in game 1 at CIS
March 1, 2013
QUEBEC CITY – The UNB Varsity Reds opened play at the CIS men’s volleyball championship against the McMaster Marauders and dropped their first game 3 -0 (23-25, 17-25, 14-25). The Varsity Reds will now move on to play Trinity Western on Saturday at 12:30pm. Watch live at http://www.cis-sic.tv/
In the first set of the match UNB opened play with outside hitter Marc White up to serve. UNB put the first point on the board and from there on in the V-Reds and the Marauders stayed within two points of each other throughout the set. The lead changed hands several times all the way to 22-21 to McMaster when UNB’s Losier set the ball to Toonders who banged it down for the point and again all tied up at 22 and again at 23 when McMaster suddenly got a quick two points to win the set 25-23.
In the second set the V-Reds again matched the Marauders point for point to sevens when McMaster pulled off some key plays and a couple of service aces from CIS rookie of the year Demyanenko to pull away from the Varsity Reds and put the second set away 25-17.
In the third set the Marauders proved too much for the V-Reds who couldn’t to regain their momentum and composure of the first set and were unable to connect with their passes. McMaster took the set 25-14.
Coach McMorran felt that his guys played really well in the first set but struggled in the second and third. “The second set we didn’t pass the ball really well and then we tried to do a little too much and we not able to manage the ball on offence and then when that happens we struggled.”
“You can’t make errors against a team like McMaster,” continued McMorran. “We had a game plan against their receivers and our servers didn’t hit the spot we were supposed to early on and that makes for a long day.”
“Our guys are not very happy with that effort; but they know how to correct it. We didn’t execute as we know we can and should have.” McMorran says his team will regroup and focus on the next game.
UNB will now take on Trinity Western University who came into the tournament as second seed but lost 3-2 to Western in game two of the tournament.
