Plandowski Joins REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) The defending U SPORTS and Atlantic University Sport champion UNB REDS men’s hockey team is naming defenceman Oscar Plandowski to their recruiting class of 2024.
The Halifax native recently completed his major junior career with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
He’s signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of their 2024-2025 AUS season.
“It’s an honour to be joining the REDS,” said Plandowski. “The winning pedigree of UNB speaks for itself. The chance to be a part of a winning program and get a great education was too hard to pass up.”
In 294 regular season QMJHL games with Moncton, Charlottetown, and Drummondville, the blue-liner recorded 20 goals and 68 assists.
“We are excited to add Oscar to our team,” said UNB head coach Rob Hennigar. “He has played under Coach Hepditch, and we know what we are getting with him on and off the ice. He’s a highly competitive player who is an exceptional skater and can also defend and break up plays in both the neutral zone and defensive zone.”
Plandowski was a 5th round pick of the Detroit Red Wings, 155th overall in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.
“I would like to think of myself as a hard-working and dedicated person who fits in well with the culture at UNB,” said Plandowski. “I am a two-way defenceman who can skate well and distribute the puck.”
With the departure of at least two members of last season’s defensive core, the REDS welcome Plandowski’s size and ability.
“With Oscar's skill and skating ability, he can play in all situations and will be a key recruit for our team,” said Hennigar.
Plandowski will study Business while attending UNB.
