Reds Add Veteran Guard
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds men’s basketball team is adding veteran guard Antonio Kostakos to the roster ahead of the 2020-21 Atlantic University Sport season.
The 22-year-old Kostakos, from Halifax, is a graduate of the Sport and Leisure Management program at Holland College, where he played three seasons for the Hurricanes.
During his college career, Kostakos was part of two Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association championship teams (2017 & 2018) and two Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association bronze medal winning teams (2017 & 2018).
“Antonio is a proven commodity as an excellent knockdown shooter,” said Reds head coach Brent Baker. “Physically, he’s built for our league, which is important come playoff time. Bringing three years of experience from the college level will make him an integral part of our quest for an AUS title.”
Before college, the 6’0” Kostakos played at Citadel High School, where he and the Phoenix won the 2014 Halifax city league title.
“The Reds play a style that compliments my game,” said Kostakos. “They play a fast-paced game. Something that has always stood out to me about UNB is that the players always shoot the ball with confidence. Watching the Reds play, you can see that the coaching staff has complete confidence in their abilities. I’m really excited to attend UNB, and be a part of something special.”
Kostakos honed his guard skills at various levels within Basketball Nova Scotia’s programming between 2011 and 2015.
In the short-term, Kostakos has set his sights on improving as an individual player and a teammate. His long-term goal, as a Red, is to win an AUS title.
Kostakos will study Business Administration while attending UNB.
