Smal Happy With U SPORTS Performances
(VICTORIA, BC) The U SPORTS Swimming season has come to an end, and Leah Smal is happy with the way her second season as a UNB Red went.
Smal swam in two 'A' finals at the recent U SPORTS Championships, in Victoria, BC.
She finished 5th in the 50 metre backstroke and 7th in the 100 metre backstroke.
"Getting the chance to swim in finals at the U SPORTS Championships is always awesome," said Smal. "I didn't swim as fast as I would have liked, but overall, it was a solid meet and a good way to end the year."
Smal swam in the 'B' final of the 200 metre backstroke, finishing 6th, and in the 'C' final of the 50 metre freestyle, where she was 7th.
Smal qualified for the national championship meet by winning a total of seven medals at the Atlantic University Sport Championships, in February, where she swept the gold medals in the women's backstroke events.
Noah Horwood completed his Reds career with a 4th place finish in the 'B' final of the men's 50 metre breaststroke. Horwood posted a personal best in the final, covering the distance in 29.84 seconds
"I'm really happy with my Reds career," said Horwood. "Building from one medal in my first year to getting eight in my career feels really good. Being a Red added another dimension to being a UNB student, which made me feel more included in the school. Being on the swim team brought me many friendships and new experiences that I am very happy to have."
Horwood swam in the preliminaries for the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke events, but failed to advance.
