Smal Leads Reds At Mt. A Meet
Three individual podium finishes
(SACKVILLE, NB) Leah Smal (Fredericton, NB) scored a win in the women's 50-metre backstroke and added second place finishes in the 100-metre and 200-metre freestyle events to lead the UNB Reds at Saturday's Mount Allison Invitational swim meet.
Smal was also a member of the UNB foursome that finished second in the women's 4-by-50-metre freestyle relay.
Freshman Erik Staeben (Fredericton, NB) swam to second place in the men's 50-metre butterfly and the 100-metre freestyle, where he finished just two one-hundredths of a second back of the winner.
"I was very happy with the racing today," said Reds head coach Robin Ferdinand. "We had some really solid swims."
Alexie Sanford (New Maryland, NB) was second in the women's 50-metre freestyle, while Noah Horwood (Fredericton, NB) placed third, behind Staeben, in the men's 50-metre butterfly, and was fourth in the men's 100-metre breaststroke.
"We now have a few more things to work on leading into the Kemp-Fry Invitational, in two weeks time," said Ferdinand.
Dalhousie University hosts the final meet of the first half of the season, November 16-18, in Halifax.
