(FREDERICTON, NB) The U SPORTS No. 6 ranked Acadia Axewomen surrendered their first goal of the season, but hung on to beat the UNB Reds 2-1 on Saturday.
Allie Scovil (Hubley, NS) scored her fifth goal of the season in the 36th minute and it stood as the winner, as Acadia improved to 5-0-0.
The Reds are 0-0-5 after the loss.
Julea Walsh (Hammonds Plains, NS) opened the scoring, in the 6th minute, converting a kick from the corner.
Scovil's goal put the Axewomen up 2-0, but the Reds raced right down the turf and countered one minute later.
Jelisa Joncas (Burlington, ON) pushed the ball deep before beating Acadia keeper Sarah Charnock (Newmarket, ON).
"I noticed that the defender was flat, so I took it as far as I could and once I realized I was ahead of her I cut in to the net and took my opportunity," said Joncas. "It was right after they scored, so we were going off some adrenaline. We just wanted to get one as soon as we could and just not get down on the goal that they'd scored."
UNB pressed late, but Acadia's one goal lead stood.
Charnock was named the Subway Player of the Game.
Acadia now heads to Sackville, where they face the Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday.
The Reds travel to Moncton on Sunday to face les Aigles Bleues. That game is scheduled to start at 1:00pm.
"We still have a long way to go, it's still the beginning of the season," said Joncas. "One game is not going to get us down. We're going to come back tomorrow in Moncton and bring all that we can."
