Varsity Reds and Axewomen prove even match in 0-0 tie
UNB's Varsity Reds and the Acadia Axewomen played to a 0-0 tie in Fredericton today.
Both teams came off of big wins yesterday. The Varsity Reds came back from behind to top the CBU Capers 3-2, and the Axewomen defeated Moncton 6-0.
The two teams showed themselves to be remarkably evenly matched out on BMO Field today, having near exact numbers of opportunities and displaying very similar methods of creating them.
"You have two teams who try to play the exact same way and have similar systems," UNB head coach Jon Crossland said. "It was really like chess out there today. There wasn't a lot of chances either side. We knew it would be similar to that, we just hoped we'd find a way to sneak [a win] out again."
The last time UNB met Acadia it was a different story, with UNB losing 0-4. Crossland says this year's team is a year older and a year more mature, and that added mental strength is making a difference out on the field.
"If you look at this weekend's games, you have the league champion and you have the two finalists from last year. And you get four out of six points. That's a good weekend," Crossland said. "It's positives to go on, and we're just getting better for next week for PEI."
AUS Subway Player of the Game was UNB's Hayley Gates. In net for the shut-out was Sami Jo Bell.
The Varsity Reds play their next home game at 5pm on Friday, September 19, when they will host UPEI.
The Acadia Axewomen will host St.FX at the same time.
