November 5, 2011
The Dalhousie Tigers clawed their way into the AUS women’s soccer championships, which will be hosted at UNB’s BMO Centre, in Fredericton, NB, tomorrow.
The Tigers defeated the Saint Mary’s Huskies today dropping their Halifax rivals with a 3-2 victory.
The second semi-final match of the day kicked-off after the UPEI Panthers defeated the Cape Breton University Capers, with a 1-0 overtime victory.
The Dalhousie game started off with a strong push by the Tigers, who dominated and controlled the ball possession the entire game.
However, it was the Huskies who first put the ball in the back of the net, when in the 38th minute, SMU midfielder, Lindsay Millett, gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead over the Tigers.
At the end of the first half, Dal was unable to even the score, but their strong defensive line kept the Huskies from increasing their lead.
The second half saw the most action, as the Tigers continued to play controlled soccer, as they read the field and made accurate passes to their teammates.
The first Tiger to score was midfielder, Joanna Blodgett, who sniped the ball in the back of the net, in a cross and finish play.
Dalhousie striker Emma Landry was the second Tiger to score, giving Dal a 2-1 lead against the Huskies.
SMU pushed back, and not even a minute later, Kelly Burgess brought the Huskies to a tie game 2-2 after she buried the ball in the back of Dal’s net.
The Tigers continued to control their play, but the Huskies, who weren’t as controlled or patient, both fought until the last minute to make it to the AUS championship game, the next day.
In extra time, the Tigers defeated the Huskies as Dalhousie midfielder Doriana Homerski, found the back of the net, winning the game 3-2 for the Tigers.
Tomorrow the Dalhousie Tigers will take on the top-seeded UPEI Panthers, for the AUS women’s soccer championship banner.
