Tigers drop Varsity Reds to advance to AUS women's soccer semi final
November 4, 2011
Opening up the SUBWAY AUS women’s soccer championship, Friday at BMO Centre at UNB, the Dalhousie Tigers dropped the host Varsity Reds 2-0.
It did not take the Tigers long to find the back of the net as first-year Dalhousie striker, Doriana Homerski, put her team up 1-0 over the Varsity Reds.
UNB would struggle to put any offensive pressure on the Tigers defence, until Brianna Ford broke through the defensive line. She would run out of room, hitting the side of the post with her shot.
The Varsity Reds would gain some momentum at the end of the first half, which was broke up with the halftime break.
In the second half the Tigers continued to press on offense with multiple chances being stopped by Varsity Reds rookie keeper, Jackie Blank.
Dal would find the back of the net in the 59th minute, but the goal was disallowed, with UNB being given a free kick after Blank was injured on the play. She would remain in the game, although she was rattled.
UNB would begin to put some pressure on the Tigers, but they put the game out of reach for the Varsity Reds with a goal in the 70th minute by Emma Landry to lead 2-0.
Although they would shift players forward UNB could not get any quality chances as their season ended.
“We got everything we could ask for out of the team,” said UNB head coach Andy Cameron. “We created a lot of chances in the first half, we played with commitment, we did what we wanted to tactically, and we played the best game that we did all season and that’s what our objective was. We just came up a little short.”
Dalhousie will take on Saint Mary’s in the semi final tomorrow at 2:15 p.m. at BMO Centre.
Tigers head coach Jack Hutchinson is not worried about Saint Mary’s being rested or his team being fatigued by playing an extra game.
“As head coach I’ve been here five times (AUS women’s soccer championships),” said Hutchinson. “I’ve got to the final twice from not having the bye and I’ve had the bye and lost that game twice. I think every team here has the ability to come out and win this championship regardless of whether they have the bye or not. It’s nice to have the day off, but it’s nice to play too.”
“I don’t mind where I’m at right now.”
