Women's soccer tie Mount Allison
October 3, 2011
The UNB women’s soccer team dominated play against the Mount Allison Mounties yesterday in AUS soccer action at BMO Centre. Even though the game was tied 0-0 at the end of the game, for those 90 minutes, the Reds played with heart and grit as they kept the Mounties at bay.
“We were pushing forward so they looked to counter,” said head coach Andy Cameron.
Although the team was short two key players, Heather Ambery and Brianna Ford, who both suffered knocks to their knees in previous games and are out recovering, the team held their own as they continued to dominate the Mounties end, disrupting their defense and challenging their keeper.
Although they dominated possession for most of the game, fatigue played a role in MTA making a push back at the end of the match.
“We played two games in two days and they came in rested. So fatigue is an issue in the last part of the game.”
The Varsity Reds pushed Mount Allison’s defense, and on multiple occasions had beautiful corner kicks that missed just short of the net, or direct kicks that curved just shy of the goal.
One of the main contributors to the Reds offence was rookie midfielder Meggie Spicer, who out-ran the Mounties defense, and continuously challenged every play, never backing-off of the ball.
The same can be said of the Reds defensive line, who continuously ran-down the Mounties, if they had the chance at a break-away ball. However, with a strong voice and reflexes on the backline, rookie keeper Jackie Blank, continued to remain a solid anchor for the team, never letting a goal into the net.
The Varsity Reds also played the UPEI Panthers on Saturday, where they lost 1-0 against the AUS’ top team. However, Cameron saw positives in the loss.
“We played very well yesterday and today. Nationally ranked sixth I believe. We had a good solid effort, we had some chances, didn’t score but it was our best game of the year.”
