UNB suffers heartbreak in home opener losing to SMU
SMU was the first find the back of the net as Kelly Burgess sniped one past UNB rookie and keeper Jackie Blank, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
The Varsity Reds were not phased as not even ten minutes after Burgess' goal against UNB, player of the game Sam Legacy had scored two goals to give UNB a 2-1 lead.
“Sam did very well, she’s coming into her own, but it’s also a reflection of her getting service from the rest of the team and that makes the strikers job easy.” said Cameron.
However, SMU challenged the Reds at every corner, and at the 45 minute mark, the Huskies tied the game a 2-2.
“We gave up a goal in the first and last minute of the half, and then we outplayed them in the second half,” said head coach Andy Cameron.
By the second half, the Varsity Reds weren’t ready to leave the score where it was. They outplayed the Huskies, with stronger pulls on the defensive line and more shots on goal.
The Varsity Reds then scored a third goal against the Huskies, but it was disallowed due to being offside.
In the 79th minute the Huskies scored their third and final goal against the Varsity Reds, handing UNB a 3-2 loss.
“I think it was just a few mental mistakes that cost us the game today but we got to correct those in order to get points,” said Cameron.
Sunday UNB will take on the Dalhousie Tigers at BMO Centre, kick-off is at 1 p.m.
