Jon Crossland announced as head coach of the women's soccer program
April 26, 2012
Director of Athletics at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, John Richard, announced today that Jon Crossland has been named as head coach of the women’s soccer program.
Crossland is a UNB graduate who earned both a Bachelor of Science Kinesiology (2004) and a Bachelor of Education (2007) while playing soccer for five years with the Varsity Reds. He is holds a National “B” Coaching License and is a Learning Facilitator for Soccer Canada.
Crossland comes to UNB from School District 18 where he has been employed as an Elementary Physical Education Specialist since 2008 and has recently been working towards a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Leadership on a part-time basis.
“We had a number of excellent candidates who expressed an interest in the position with our program. We believe that Jon’s soccer experience, professionalism and enthusiasm make him the best choice to lead our women’s soccer program,” said Richard.
“This is an exciting time for women’s soccer at UNB,” continued Richard. “Our soccer programs have a first class facility and our goal is to raise the profile of our women’s program to be a nationally recognized, competitive program, on an annual basis – I believe Jon is the coach to achieve that goal.”
While working full-time as a school teacher Crossland has committed countless hours over the past seven years as an assistant coach with the UNB men’s soccer program. He has increasingly taken a lead role in the organization, programming and operation of the V-Reds development leagues and camps.
Obtaining a head coaching opportunity at UNB has been a life goal of Crossland’s. “My vision is to make the UNB women’s soccer program the program of choice for female student-athletes and to develop a program with players that make a significant difference on the field, in the classroom and in the community.”
“The BMO Centre is a unique facility which enables our soccer teams to train year round – there are few universities across Canada with this type of facility for their student athletes,” continued Crossland. “BMO Centre is also a great recruiting tool for the program.”
Crossland will officially begin work as the head coach of the women’s soccer program on May 14th.
